Railroad Engineer Simulation at SEPTA

As PA Senate Majority Transportation Chair, Senator Ward visited SEPTA (Southeastern PA Transportation Authority). SEPTA is the 5th overall largest public transportation network in the US – buses, trains, trolleys, subway. It serves Montgomery, Chester, Bucks, Delaware and Philadelphia counties. The region’s economy would come to a total halt without the system. Senator enjoyed playing the engineer in the train simulator. Through snow, rain and ice, all of the passengers on board were dropped off safely at the station.

Visiting with Constituents

Senator Ward visited Pleasant Lane Farm, this farm is incorporating a first of its kind laboratory in their cheese making and dairy facility. The farm is owned and operated by Ralph and Ann Frye; They are joined by their sons Jason, Todd and Chad along with their families. Ralph Frye is a Marine Corp. veteran. PA Agriculture Secretary, Russell Redding stated “farmers who are veterans keep us fed during the day and let us sleep safely at night”. PA Farm Bureau President Rick Ebert and Senator Pat Stefano also joined the group during the farm visit.

Senator Ward met with some of the apprentices from the Operating Engineers Local 66. These individuals are gaining the skills necessary to make a great living, the challenge right now is there are job openings but no one to fill them in many sectors of our economy. The trade unions offer apprenticeships and opportunity to land a good job without the burden of high student debt. There are also opportunities through trade schools and some Community colleges to learn a skill that will send you on your way to an apprenticeship.

Julia Collins participated in the GirlGov program and shadowed Senator Ward for a day. Julia is a cyber-school student from Latrobe and is interested in participating in GirlGOV because she believes her intelligent ideas, eloquence and leadership skills would contribute to this organization. Julia joined Senator Ward to Committee Meetings and scheduled meetings in her office and also met other constituents that were visiting.
