GREENSBURG- Sonny Perdue, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, visited the Westmoreland Fairgrounds this morning for the kickoff of the federal Farmers to Families Food Box Program. The Federal Government purchased $3 billion worth in a variety of healthy produce, dairy and meat from distributers that were affected by the pandemic. In order to prevent the waste of dairy and produce previously intended for bulk purchasers, this program will provide the food to local schools, food banks and other non-profits.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture partnered with distributers and the Westmoreland County Food Bank to organize a drive-thru service for families to receive fresh produce, dairy and meat during the COVID-19 emergency.
Some of the local dairy suppliers that are participating in the Farmers to Families Food Box Program include Turner, Schneider and Marburger Farm.
It was so wonderful to see our community come together during a crisis. Sonny Perdue reminded us of the USDA’s motto; “Do right and feed everyone”.
